RAILWAY TO FOXTON

Hon. W. H. Herries, the kindly and amiable Minister of Railways, has been enjoying quite a good time between Boston and Palmerston. A number of local requirements, nearly all of them of a most desirable character, wore brought under his notice, and, as might have teen expected, were rewarded with his good-natured acquiescence. Mr Herries is always good-natured, evoE under trying circumstances, and theso particular circumstances wore gratify* mg and comforting, embracing, as they did, the customary round of festivities and banquets to which self-styled Roform is submitting itself with com* meudablo grace and forbearance, seeing that, vide its former speeches, it holds such things in abhorrence. Naturally, tho proposed now lino from Boston to Marton was mentioned, and naturally, also, Mr Herries promised to giro tho request his due consideration. So, at all events, the press telegrams inform us. However,- if these banquets havf> been stimulated by a lively sense ol railway construction favours to corner tho banqueters havo missed their, Ministerial mark. They will require to set to work to roast more turkey and pack more magnums of champagne ia ice. Mr Herries is not the Minister in charge of the construction of railways. That is the Hon. W. Fraser’s particular business. Besides, it is not quite clear that Mr Fraser is prepared to tak« kindly to banquets at the present moment. They say ho ia wearing a dyspeptic look, caused probably by ths plethora of money in the Treasury, but that is no reason why he should not give tho question of railway connection with Foxton every consideration. It has been talked of long enough, and ought to hare been constructed years ago.
