SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
CHAMPION BREAKS ANOTHER RECORD. Press Association. WANGANUI, February 7. The New Zealand swimming championships were continued in fine weather tonight, and there was another large attendance. Malcolm Champion again proved his worth, winning the 220 championship in 2m in 35ssc, beating his own New Zealand record by 4sec. Results: 50yds Inter-club Handicap Semifinals: First heat—Stevens 1, Leslie 2. Time, 34sec. Third heat—Hawke 1, Moore 2. Time, 3(isec. Tho decision was badly received, many considering that Trott finished second. Second heat — Stevenson 1, Spear 2. A great race, the winner coming up from a very bad position. Time, 32 2-osec. Final—Stevens (Napier) 1, Hawke (New Plymouth) 2. Time, 32 2-Ssec. Moore (Wanganui) was second, but was disqualified for breaking. 100yds Ladies’ Relay Race —Wanganui B 1, Wanganui A 2, Masterton 3. Time,Imin 40sec. 220yds Championship, (holder of title, M. E. Champion): First heal—From a splendid start Champion and Davey touched together at the 50yds mark, Pfankuch and Bowen being about Gyds behind. At 100yds Champion drew slightly away from Davey, and at 150yds had established a lead of gome twelve feet. This he increased to twelve yards in the next lap, and eventually' won by about 21iyds from Bowen, who was five yards in front of Davey, Pfankuch finishing last. Time, 2min to.sec. Second heat —Three starters took the water together, Atkinson _ soon leading by six feet from Seymour and Welson, and at 100yds Atkinson was a yard in front of Welson, with Seymour five yards in tho rear. This order was maintained to tho 200yds mark, when Atkinson took'the lead for homo by five feet, and a beautiful finish saw Welson to the rope a touch ahead of Atkinson, with Seymour some yards back. Time, 2min 43 3-ssec. Final—Champion 1, Welson 2, Atkinson 3. Time; 2miu 35sec. Welson wont oil first. At the first turn Champion and Atkinson collided, but lost little, and at 73yds Welson and Champion draw away,- the latter doing the 100yds in Cisco. The order continued the same with the exception that Champion increased his lead, and. at the home turn Champion, sprinted and won by 12vds. Atkinson was about eight yards back, and Bowen (Napier) did not finish. Interprovincial Life Saving Championships—Canterbury A (smin 1 2-SseC) 1, W ellington (urniu 23seo) 2, Canterbury B vomin 33 2-ssec) “a, Wanganui (smin 44sec) 4. Hawke’s Bay did not start. Canterbury A wins the Wigram shield. 100yds Ladies' Championship (holder of title. Miss A. O’Leary). First heat — Miss Hawke was last to enter the water. Miss A. O’Leary soon got a lead, and did the 50 in 40sec, and had a lead of six yards. Coming home she drew still further away and won by twelve yards, with Miss Ostler second. Second heat —Miss Collier came up in the lead from the start, and was first to turn. Miss Bade gained on her slightly at tho 50yds, >vhero Miss Farquhar drew .up and Miss Bade had to give way to Miss Farquhar, who went well ahead and won easily.' Miss Collier was third. Time, Imin 33 2-ssec. The final will be swum on Monday morning. 75yds Schoolboys* luterprovincial Championship—T. A. Thomas went ahead early, and was in front of Stevenson by a couple of feet at the 50yds. The local lad had no difficulty in getting home by five yards from Stevenson (Hawke’s Bay), who was three yards in. front of Carpenter (Hastings). Time, 50seo. Inter-College Old Boys’ Raoe—Wanganui 1, Wellington 2, Nelson 3. Polo Championship—Wangarsui A v. Canterbury A. _ Canterbury hem several shots without result until the tell floated past tho goal-keeper, Atkinson being the scorer. Then Atkinson slung' another goal in, and Canterbury were two up at the spell. Then Canterbury played a splendid game and won by six. to nil.
