SUBMARINE EARTHQUAKE
STEAMER’S PASSENGERS ALARMED. (Received February 8, 0.55 a.m.) SYDNEY, February 7. Tho Norddeutscher liner Scharnhorst, while crossing the. Indian Ocean en route for Australia, on January 19th, vibrated violently from end to end. resembling the effect of the engines being put at full speed astern. Tho startled passengers rushed to tho deck. It was a delightfully calm night, with moonlight. It is explained that there was a sub marine earthquake shock, lasting fortyfive seconds.
