TAXES ON FOOD

MEMORIAL TO CHANCELLOR OF EXCHEQUER. IMPOSSIBLE TO COMPLY. LONDON, February 6. In reply to the 103 Radical members of the House of Commons who memorialised the Chancellor of the Exchequer, expressing the hope that he would take advantage of the prevailing prosperity to reduce the present taxes on tood, particularly on sugar and tea, the ground of the request being that these taxes fall on the poorest, and their removal would make free trade secure, Mr Lloyd George says that it is impossible to comply with the request in the coming Budget.
