CITY STREET TRAFFIC
GOVERNMENT TO TAKE FULL CHARGE.
In ail probability the new scheme under which the Government will take control of all street traffic iu the city will ■Mine into operation without much dc,ay. Though the general plan has been decided upon, the details still have to oe filled in and until this is done the Agreement cannot be completed. The Mayor told a "Times” represent tative yesterday afternoon the Government intends to sot aside six special constables to look after the traffic with the help of those members of the horco on. the ordinary beat?. The police will see that the rules of the road lire observed and that all the by-laws are thoroughly kept. Generally speaking, the new agreement will mean that the city will hand ever to the Government the complete control of the street traffic, with a pro--1 viso, of course, that the police arc to accept the guidance of the city engineer when such is given. Mr McLaren thinks the new arrangement will work very well, for instead of the enforcement of bv-laws being left to haphazard it will bo properly, attended to. A similar arrangement is force in many largo cities elsewhere, a'pd is found to be very satisfactory.
