LAWN TENNIS NOTES

COMING EVENTS. Wellington Provincial Championships and Palmerston North Club’s Handicap Tournament Palmerston North, March 22, 24, and 25. N.Z. University Championships —Wellington, March 22nd and 25th. North Island Interprovincial Championships—New Plymouth, Easter. Wanganui Tournament —Championships and Handicaps, Wanganui, March 21st, 22nd, and 24th. LAST SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Th© only senior match played was a postponed fixture in the ladies’ competition, Victoria College v. Newtown, the collegians winning by a margin of two rubbers and fifteen games. Misses Van Staveren and Atmdre, by winning their respective singles and double against Mrs Nagle and Miss Robinson, put College Ll a winning position, which was assured by an easy victory for Miss K. Mclntosh ih the third single. Mrs Bell scored Newtown’s only success in the singles after a close.finish with Miss F. Cooke, , the same player also assisting Miss Dempsey to capture th© second double, thus accounting for two rubbers. ■ A peculiar position arose over th© Newtown and Brougham Hill fixture in the men’s competition. Neither team wanted te play, as it could not possibly affect the championship, so both teams decided te default. However, the match secretary (Mr A. L. Berry) notified such a course te he irregular, and that only one team could scratch, leaving the other the winner. . ... Tho best battles in tho men’s junior competition wero those between Butcher and Dick (6—5, C—s), and Pratt and Edwards (3 —6, 6 —5, G—o) (Brougham Hill v. Newtown), Lewis v. K. A. Henderson (4—6, 6—4, 6—3) (Kona Bay v. Karon), and Worboys v. Matheson (3 —6, 6—5. 6—l) (Kilbirnie v. Trinity). The ladies’ junior championship has been won by Newtown, who defeated Trinity by five rubbers to one. As a matter of fact only four, rubbers were played, both sides being a player short, a difficulty which was overcome by defaulting ono rubber apiece. Had Trinity won by any chance a triangular final would have been necessary with the above teams and Brougham Hill as, contestants. The results of the actual matches played were Miss P- Voitch v. Miss Crewes 7—5, Mies Asquith v. Mrs Smart 7—o. Miss Printzen v. Miss Henderson 7—l; Misses Asquith and Printzen v. Mrs Smart and Miss Crewes 7—4. (Newtown, four rubbers to nil and twen-ty-eight games te ten). AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. Tho Auckland provincial championship tournament, held on January 25th and 29th and February Ist, was concluded on Saturday last, with the exception of the combined doubles, the final of-which was postponed owing to the absence of one of the players. GENERAL .NOTEnS.Miss Gladys Dimant , (fornmrl.r «t the Wellington Lawn Tennis Club.), but. M> a resident of Nel«.n wae ««cce«ul in the tournament concluded tru.r , ® this week in winning the Ladipe > pionsliip Singles of the province, was also n member of.the winning combination in the combined, doubles. Owing lo the absence of-several players last Saturday the completion of the Hutt Club’s annual championships ana handicaps was delayed, but favourable circumstances fatality should be reached this afternoon. P. W.- <*»<»• eon and J. M. Power should be well in among the .firsts and seconds. - Remington Jones and Miss M. tnglis were the respective winners of the sealed handicap singles recently concluded at the Khaiidallnh Club’s courts. P le r ,, r , three places in edch section were filled by the under-noted playere; Alen s, Jones 7J wins, Robicsou 7 wine, P- Mausfield 5 wins; ladies. Miss M. Ingles 10. wins, Miss F.. Mansfield 01 wins. Miss E. Grubb Si wins. . ~ The combined doubles (sealed handicap, Yankee) commence this afternoon. F. Buddie and Mrs Buddie are probably the strongest combination. The chances of getting a representative team away to New Plymouth at Easter for the North Island inter-proviucial tournament do not appear too favourable in view of the provincial Championships at Palmerston North- At any rate, the clubs have been asked to nominate players -willing to make the trip. Tho Eona Bay Club’s handicap singles, (men’s) has reached the final stage, wliicii will be contested by 1. P. ,b.elly (10) and Cecil Howden (12), the former of whom disposed of last year's winner, F. A. Lewis (ecu), in tho semi-final- life ladles’ event is taking some time plete, as instead of “sudden-death the Yankee principle- governs the event.
