AUCKLAND NOTES
Special to the “Times.” AUCKLAND. February 7. W. Mobberley is busy gettiug a team ready for the South Auckland meeting. Blue Garments is hitting out boldly in his work, and the black gelding should run well in events ahead. The defeat of Goldsize was a real knockout to Aucklanders on the opening day at Gisborne. As was expected, Jolio Fille captured the To Kuiti Cup for the second year in succession. The mare was a class above her opponents. The successful horsemen at To Kuiti were J. Conquest, with three wins (Matawerewere, Bluestone, and Jolie Fille); J. Trigger, two' (Salvia twice); Roach (Denbies), McMillan (Positive), MoFlynn (Flying Soult). Denbies, who defeated Surplus, Hyperion and .company in the Hurdles, has been off tbe scene for a long time, and his win yesterday was unexpected. He is an aged gelding by Federation, but is not new to the business, having run second in a Maiden Hurdles at Avondale about two years ago. During the last fortnight Jolie Fille has won the Tnuranga Cup, Takapuna Cup, and To Kuiti Cup. Her next engagement is the Rotorua Cup. Tiresome is to be sent to Taranaki to fulfil her engagement in the Cup. The mare is a good stayer, and with her light impost should make a fair showing. She' will be ridden by J. O’Shea. Worcester is another Aucklander booked to race at the Taranaki meeting. This is a good horse, and he should pick up a stake at the gathering. In the Stewards’ Handicap at the Takapuna meeting Worcester did not get away too well, but he came with a fine run in the straight, and got to within half a length of Overtime, and easily beat Waiorewa for second place. On tbe second (day Worcester walked away with the Welter, hut the opposition was not strong. Prince Soult is now in steady work at EUerslio, and as he is looking well he should be quite at his best when the
autumn meetings are under discussion. The hillerslie trainer, George Absolum, who has been recuperating at To Aroha, is back again at headquarters superintending the preparation of Santa Itosa, Tagiwai, Overtime and Co. Makura, who won tho Maiden Plate at Takapuna, ha s changed ownership, and is now trained by H. Barr at Onehunga. . . , . v La Beina is doing nicely in her exercises, and, all going well, the mare will fulfil her engagement in the Wanganui Cup. Monotone ran badly in a hack event at Te Kuiti, and during the day found a new owner at 40 sovs. Monotone will possibly go into JV- Cunningham’s stable. Salvia, a double winner at Te Kuiti, is trained at Ellerslie by J. Williamson.
