MAJOR-GENERAL GODLEY

DENIAL OF A PRINTED RUMOUR. Major-General Godley, Commandant of tho Forces, will leave at an early date on a visit to England. He wifi attend the summer and autumn manoeuvres of the British Army, and confer with officers commanding tho defence forces of the various Dominions and the Imperial defence authorities, with a view to co-ordination of training and administrative control throughout tho Empire. It is two years and a half since Major-General Godley was in England, and be is making the trip in order to acquaint him. self with tho latest developments of military science. Speaking with a “Times” reporter last night. .Major-Genera! Godley gavo an emphatic and unqualified denial to the rumour, printed in a local paper; that he intended to retire from his present command. Ho expressed annoyance that such an unfounded rumour should have been printed without his being given an opportunity to deny it, and'ho had no intention whatever of leaving the New Zealand defence systorn in its present stage. He had every desire to see the system fully evolved. Major-General Godley will leave Net Zealand after tho training period, iwrobably aliout the end of May, and ho will’he absent from tho Dominion for 4 period of about five months.
