From Our Own Correspondent. February 6. Inspector Cairns reported to a meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board yesterday that the district had been fairly free from infectious diseases during the past two months, and on the whole the district was in a healthy condition. There had been two cases of scarlet fever' and one of tuberculosis in the Masterton borough, two oases of scarlet fever in the Masterton county, two cases of scarlet fever in the Pahiatua county and one case ot diphtheria in the Carterton borough. The death occurred yebtorday of Miss Ruby Soorrar, daughter of Air. and Mrs Soorrar, of Masterton. at the age of seventeen years. The Masterton Golf Club has decided to hold a tournament at Easter. Three nurses in the employ of the Wairarapa Hospital Board have written to the board complaining of the treatment received in the outlying hospitals, and the board has sot up a special committee to draw up rules and regulations in connection with the nursing scheme under which the nurses work. Mr J. H. Ainslio has left Eketahmm for New Plymouth, where ho intends to reside. _ , ■ ~ , The new church at Lansdown, which cost £843 to erect, will bo opened on Sunday next. Mr McLeod, a member Of the Wairarapa Hospital Board, has given notice that ho will move at the next meeting that the number of members of the board be reduced from eighteen to nine. Messrs Rankin and Webb, of the Stock Department at Masterton, will judge the exhibit of noxious weeds at the Bketahuna Horticultural Show. Mr H. Hammond, of Palmerston North, will succeed Mr B. B. Cameron as accountant at the Masterton branch of the Bank of Now South Wales. Mr Cameron baa boon appointed manage! at Eketahuna. _ Mr and Mrs O. Elgar, of Feathcrston, intend to visit England and will leave in May next. , . . ' , Mr R. Knoakcs, who claims to bo the the first white boy born in Greytown, some sixty years ago, is at present on a visit to the district. Mrs H. Knapp, of Greytown, is a sister. Mr Knoakes’s mother was the first white woman who died in Greytown. Mr W, AitohiSon, of Martinborongh, will leave on a trip to the Old Country shortly. . Mr P. Plummer has been elected captain of the Martinborongh Fire Brigade. Mr E. Lefort' first lieutenant, and Mr A. Wilton, formerly of Masterton, secretary. ... Mr Harry Rees has been appointed conductor and manager of the Greytown Amateur Operatic Society, Mr Bert Hall secretary, and Miss Armstrong pianiste. ‘ • At the Greytown S.M. Court yesterday a half-caste Maori named John Richards was committed for trial a* the next sitting of the Masterton Supremo Court on a charge of having committed perjury in evidence given by him at an inquest on the body of Ropata Ngairo. Bail was allowed in the sum of £IOO.
