SHORT-LIVED FREEDOM

PRISONER BREAKS FROM CELL About 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon a daring attempt to escape from the Lambton quay police cells was made by a prisoner named Allen Moody. This man had, along with another accused person, Harold Bronson, been charged at the Magistrate’s Court in the morning with working the “confidence trick” on a man. Both were awaiting conveyance to the Terrace Prison. When walking through the building in which the cells are situated, a cook employed at the station noticed Moody in the passage. The alarm waimmediately raised and the prisoner was quickly recaptured and placed under lock and key in another ceii. An examination of the cell from which he escaped revealed that the bars of a ventilator above the door had beer, torn away from the woodwork. Through the aperture thus created Moody go into the passage. The other man in the cell, did not, if he had such an intention, have time to emulate his com panion’s exploit. He also was removed to another cell.
