NARROW ESCAPE

THREE MEN SAVED FROM DROWNING AT OTAKI. A narrow escape from a drowning fatality occurred near the Waikawa on Monday, writes our Otaki correspondent, when three young men, who were indulging in bathing, got into difficulties some distance froth the beach. Messrs Tom Ejis, Rehua, and others noticed their plight, and the former immediately pushed his pony into the water. The animal refused to go far, and tho rider perforce had to abandon it, recognising there was no time to be lost. He rescued a couple with his hauling apparatus, and then noticed that the third was being carried out to sea. Rehua, who was also mounted, rode his horse through the surf, and threw a rope just as the last man appeared to he giving up all hope. With some difficulty, he Drought the man to terra firma in an exhausted condition, but, after a brief lapse, he fully recovered. It appears that the three men, who were strangers to the party, got into an undercurrent, and were unable to get out, and there appears no doubt that had it not been for Messrs Elis and Rehua the trio would have been washed out to sea.
