AUCKLAND NOTES

Special to the ■‘Times.” AUCKLAND, February 4. With the conclusion of the Takapuna meeting sportsmen locally will have to engage their attention upon the country frames which are to_ take place this month. Tho Te Kuiti meeting will bo held on Thursday, and quite a large crowd of Aucklanders intend leaving tomorrow to assist at the gathering. The Cup is the attraction, and on tho form shown at Takapuna Jolio Fille should bo in big demand. The Spalpeen marc Shebeen changed hands during the Takapuna the price, it is said, being 200gns. From what I can learn Shebeen will probably bo sent to Australia shortly. J. Chaafe is at present at Hawera with Gclsize. Tho sou of Gluten had been going great guns.on the track, and it was no trouble for him to cast half a milo behind under SOsec. It is doubtful if he was ever better in his life. A good race may be expected from him in tho Frying Handicap, in which he is well treated in the handicaps. F. Loomb left on Saturday with Scorch and Monorail for the Poverty Bay meeting. Tho last-named is engaged in the Turanga Stakes, and with his light impost may run well. Scorch is in both the County Stakes and Flying Handicap, and may be reserved for the latter event. In tiro County Stakes she is asked to give 121 b to Caher Davon, who was to* gistering some attractive gallops prior to the Cup meeting at Ellerslie. J. Buchanan will ride Scorch and Monorail in their engagements. Maxwell was not taken to Egmont, and the big brother to Soultlin© is to bo prepared for autumn engagements. Glad Tidings is proving himself ouite a good one in sprint events, and his last three starts have resulted in wins. Toreador, who won a hack event each day at Takapuna, is a fine big gelding by Spalpeen. Ho was last spring bought by Mr L. Harris from Mr Graham, for whom the horse won a rate at Te Awamutu. Since being trained at Ellerslie, Toreador has at times shown himself to be possessed of speed, and “dry” backers were always waiting for him. to sport silk. Though he won easily both days at Takapuna there may be a tendency to overrate Toreador, and a perusal of the horses he beat reveals that it would be difficult to imagine a worse lot. Worcester, who annexed the Welter on Saturday, has improved out of all knowledge lately; and should he bo taken to the Taranaki meeting he will bo worth watching. DUSTINS, LTD., CATERERS. Dustins, Ltd., of Palmerston North •and Wanganui, are specialists in eaterins'. Patrons are assured of tho best of attention and first-class quality. *
