ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. A. meeting of the council of the Wellington Zoological Society was held last evening. The Itcv. J. Crewes presided, and there was a large attendance of members. Permission was received from the City Council to take up a collection in aid of the funds of the society. The chairman reported that having heard from Messrs Wirth Bros.’ manager that they intended to take away the lioness which had been at the zoo during the last year, he had asked Mr Wirth whether he was -willing to leave the animal there. Mr Wirth replied that he was communicating with his brother, and probably ho would consent to the lioness remaining in the zoo. Later he saw in the newspapers that the City Council had made arrangements to purchase her. He had received a list from Councillor Frost, with authority to collect subscriptions for the purchase. The zoological council thought that there seemed to be a feeling in the City Council that the society wanted to monopolise the privilege of collecting for the zoo. It was decided to express the hearty good wishes of the council towards the movement to purchase the lioness. It was decided to ask the council to assist the society to obtain flamingoes, to increase the number of bower birds, get scrulo turkeys, and procure a bear to occupy the acoommodation provided. . During the last four months there have been placed in the zoo by the society one flamingo, two kiwis, a white duck, and two hedgehogs, and a flamingo had been placed in the Newtown museum.
