LESSENING RESPECT FOB PARLIAMENT. LONDON. February 3. Mr Austen Chamberlain, speaking at Birmingham, commented on the deterioration of the House of Commons. The closure, he said, made it impossible for members to exercise real pressure on Ministers whose benches were empty. The debates were unreal, and they lessened the respect for Parliament. The threatened danger of representative institutions was growing, and there was an inclination to question the sanctity of the law.
