TRAMWAY FINANCE
SATISFACTORY REPORT GOOD PROFIT ON THE HOLIDAY PERIOD. “Very satisfactory indeed.” This was the term applied by the Mayor, Mr D. McLaren, to the statements of tramway and power supply revenue and expenditure which were submitted to tho tramway committee of the City Council yesterday afternoon. The statements, which were furnished by the tramways board of management, dealt with the four weeks ended January 6th, and also with the forty weeks’ period from the beginning of tho financial year. It was pointed out to a “Times” representative by tho Mayor yesterday afternoon that the credit balance from tramways and power supply for the expired portion of tho financial year now total £5648—£4797 from tramways and £B5l from power supply. “What I particularly want to draw attention to,” said tho Mayor, “is this: That the returns demonstrate tho absolute correctness of my previous statement that the Christmas and New Year period, instead of being dead, was very much tho reverse. This holiday time tho tramways have been much more used than in previous years, and compared with the 1911-12 period our revenue rose by £1427.” THE HOLIDAY PERIOD. The return of tramway finance for tho four weeks ended January sth, compared with the corresponding period of last year, is as under;
This shows that for the four weeks under review the gross revenue increased by £1427, and the working expenses decreased by £9. After allowing for capital charges the credit balance for the four weeks shows an increase of £1346. FORTY WEEKS’ FIGURES. For the portion of the financial year the comparative figures are as under:
Thus the gross revenue was £5733 more than last year, while the working expenses rose by £2193. After providing for capital charges the credit balance was £2710 bettor than a year ago. The passengers carried for the four weeks totalled 1,946,121, an increase of 11,750 passengers as compared with last year. The total passengers carried to date amounts to 17,898,142, or 19,136 more than last year. The car miles run for the four weeks totalled 173,697, a decrease of 1352 miles. Th* makes, a total mileage to date of 1,768,659, an increase of 12,592 car miles. The total revenue per car mile for the four weeks averaged 18.20, or 2.10 d more than last year, and for the forty_ weeks to date 15.21 d, as compared with 14.54 d last year. The working expenses for the four weeks averaged 10.15 d, or ,07d more than last year, and for the forty weeks to date 10.53 d as compared with 10.31 d last year. POWER SUPPLY. Hie return dealing with power supply for the forty weeks shows that the revenue was £650 more than for the corresponding period last year, and the expenses wont up by £425. The credit balance at the end of the period was £67 better. The totals were as under:
