CLOSING OF A SCHOOL
CHILDREN LOCKED OUT BY EDUCATION BOARD. Press Association. AUCKLAND, February 3. Tho announcement some time ago of the Auckland Education Board’s intention to close the Chapel street School was met with a storm -of protests, and petitions and public meetings added their pleadings to tho appeal of the committee that tho school should bo retained for the benefit of the children of the neighbourhood. The board has, however, turned a deaf ear to all appeals and arguments, for "when some 230 children rolled up outride their old school this morning to resume work after the holidays they found th© doors locked, so that none might enter. A good deal of bewilderment was expressed on the faces of th© young folk at this strange experience of a lockout, but with not a few the prospect of more holidays was clearly not displeasing. Meanwhile, the city schools committee has issued instructions to the headmaster of the Nelson street School to receive all pupils that apply for admission, and to use every available space in the rooms and corridor to accommodate those that apply for admission.
