VICE-REGAL. His Excellency the Governor will he the guest of the Wellington Club at dinner this evening. Lord Liverpool will on Thursday evening preside at the meeting to be bold in the Town Hall in connection with the union of the Methodist Churches in New Zealand. On Saturday afternoon next Lady Liverpool will open the fete organised by the Society for the Promotion of the Health of Women and Children in the grounds of the Prime Minister’s residence, Tinakori road. His Excellency leaves Wellington on Monday, the 10 th mst., in the Government steamer Tutanekai for Queen Charlotte and Pelorus Sounds. Next Tuesday ho will unveil the Captain Cook memorial in Ship Cove. In the afternoon liis Excellency is to be officially received at Picton. Lord Liverpool goes on to Blenheim, where he will bo received on Wednesday, 12th inst. Lord Liverpool returns to Wellington in the Tutanekai on the evening of the 12th, and next day leaves for Dannovirke, where he opens the agricultural show. Mr Horace Hunt returned from Auckland on Saturday. The Hon. H. D. Bell, K-C-, Minister of Internal Affairs, is expected to return from South this morning. The Hon. W. H. Herxies, Minister of Railways, expects io visit Palmerston North to-morrow. Ho will return to Wellington before the end of the week. Miss Jackson, M.A., of Christchurch, and Miss Kennedy, M.A., of Gore, have been appointed to the staff of the Stratford District High SchooL The Rev. H. M. Rogers, who ia booked through to Auckland, arrived from London last night by the Benraera. Mr F. Fish, manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Eketahuna, and formerly of Masterton, has been appointed manager of the bank’s branch at Westport. Mr and Mrs Shirtcliffo and Mr A. 0. Pearce, of Wellington, who have been spending a holiday at Taupo, and touring by motor, have returned to the city. Mr G. Hogben, Inspector-General of Schools, who attended the meeting of the University Senate at Auckland, is expected to return to Wellington about Thursday next. Sergeant Hutton, who' - has been promoted to the rank of senior sergeant, was congratulated by the Gisborne Bench and Bar yesterday, says a Press Association telegram. Mr G. Gould, of Gould, Beaumont and Co., Christchurch, returned to New Zealand by the Remuera from London last evening. Dr. H. G. Rice was a passenger for Lyttelton by the same vessel. Passengers from London by the Remuera last night included Messrs W. G. Morrison (Wellington), F. S. Culling, F. A. Chaker, and R. L. Fulford (Auckland), Arnold Jones (New Plymouth), F. Williams (Napier), and A. Champtaloup (Auckland). Captain Baxter, an old and highly respected resident, died at the Coromandel Hospital on Friday at the age of eighty-five years. In the early days ne traded between New Zealand and Tasmania. Deceased had no relatives in the Dominion. Sergeant-Majors J. Cahill, F. E. Ostler, P. M. Petty, and J. Wass, of the British Army Service Corps, arrived in Wellington last evening by the Remuera from London to assist in organising the Dominion Army Service Corps. Th© Rev.- H. Yonngman, D.D., president of the general conference of the Australasian Methodist Church, who is to preside at the opening of tho first united conference of the Methodist Church of New Zealand on Thursday, will arrive in Wellington from Christchurch this morning. He will be staying with Mr and Mrs W. Campbell, of Kilbirnie. Mr H. D. Thomson, who has been chief clerk in the Wellington Government Shipping Office during the past four years, has h"en transferred to the new Immigration Department. Ha has been suceeeded in the shipping office by Mr W. Whiteford, late chief officer of fho Tutanekai. Tho Hons. W. F. Massey. W. Fraser, W. H. Herries and A. L. Herdman are in Wellington. The Hon. R. H. Rhodes will arrive from south this morning. The Hon. F. M. B. Fisher will leave Greymouth for Westport today. The Hon. Dr Pomare returns thorn Taranaki to-day. Mr G. E. Dines, of Messrs McEldovrney Bros., was yesterday, on tho eve of his wedding, presented with a marble clock by the employees of the firm. Mr J. A. C. McEldowney, in making tho presentation, spoke highly of Mr Dines’ abilities in and out of business. When at Capetown, Captain Richmond, o fthe Lyle steamer Cape Finisterre, which arrived at Auckland on • Friday night, was recalled by the Home office, and Mr J. McNeil, the chief officer, took command. Mr H. Foster joined the steamer at Newcastle as second officer. The Rev. G. H. Mann, ex-president of the Primitive Methodist Church in New Zealand, arrived in Wellington last evening by the Item u era, from tha Old Country, where he made a stay of about seven months. He returns in time to attend the Methodist Conference in Wellington on Thursday, and to share in the formal amalgamation of Methodism. During his visit to England ho was successful in negotiating the terms of union with th© British conference. Recent overseas visitors to the Tourist Bureau included the following; Mr and Mrs C. E. Grossbeck. Pasadena, California; Mr John D. Ross. Denver, Colorado; Mr and Mrs Handlist, Durham, England,; Miss Laing, Durham, England; Miss M. Willis. London; Mr and Mrs H. Graham Vaughan, Sydney; Mr James Inglis. Childers; Mr William Robertson, Port Pirie, South Australia; Mr and Mrs Wilson, Mosman. Sydney; Mrs H. Luth, Charlton, Victoria; Mr H. C. Luth, University, Melbourne; Mr and Mrs A. A. Farthing, Sydney. Senior-Sergeant Mullaney, lately in charge of the police at Nelson, from which place he was transferred to Wellington, took up his duties at the Lambton quay police station yesterday. Senior-Sergeant Darby, who has been stationed at Lambton quay, is now on his annual leave, and is under instructions to proceed to Nelson in place of Beuior-Sergeant Mullaney. Sergeant Henry, who has come from Dunedin to fill the vacancy caused by the transfer of Sergeant Stewart to Christchurch, and Constable Fraser, of Temuka, transferred to Tinakori road, also commenced duty yesterday.
