SOUTHERN GRAIN MARKET Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, January 31. Some new season's wheat is mw offering, a number of samples from Cuiverden, Waikari, and Unuhi districts Having been shown. Growers are holding out for 3s Gd at country stations, and several offers of 3s 4d have been reiused. A few sales have, however, been made at 3s 3d to 3s lid according to quality and distance. Wheat is somewhat on the thin side, but is otherwise of good quaiuy, bouig Him and dry. . There are not many oats offering, as little threshing has been done during tho week in consequence of the rains, home oi tlie samples of Duns offering are very light, and do not command more than Is 8d to Is 9d. Gartons are worth up to 2s for prime samples, and Algerians and good Buna Is 9d to Is 19d. There have been no Danish offering yet. In other lines there is reported to be no business doing. FRUIT AND PRODUCE WELLINGTON MARKETS. During th,o past few days there lias been manifest in the local markets a decided improvement in the values ruling for peaches, plume and tomatoes; greengages and nectarines have also felt the benefit of the larger demand, ihe weather at tho present time is certainly conducive to a very large consumption ox all Lines of fruit. In regard to peaches there is a decided cessation in tho volume coming forward, but with later crops available no doubt tho present buoyancy may bo adversely affected. Tomatoes have advanced fully 50 per cent, during the past day or two, and supplies, it anything, are short of requirements. Apples aro inclined to arrive more freely; at the same time the supply is somewhat on the small side. There is a decided improvement in the quality, especially of dessert kinds. Pears, both dessert and stewing, aro in excellent demand; supplies have come forward as usual from Australia. Grapes from the same quarter have also been available, and this fruit, with tho pears, have had an excellent demand. Shipments of bananas from both Fiji and the Cook Islands have been auctioned this week; generally the condition has been good for both bunches and cases; at the same time the inquiry was not so keen, owing to summer fruits being so plentiful. The hijian bananas were transhipped at Auckland, and some excellent size bunches packed in native kits were forwarded. Tho volume of potatoes offering has again been small, and the market con-*
sequent!}' has kept at a high range ol velues. There is such a largo ilemanu reported generally that although supplies aro not unduly limited, there is no opportunity of the market receding at the moment. The effect of southern tubers coming on the market, however, will no douut counteract any disposition lor values to maintain themselves tor any length of time at high levels. The market at the time of writing is strong, hut it is difficult to forecast tho trend ol same. A further shipment of \ictonan onions arrived by the Mauuganui yesterday. Local onions arc now offering freely, and the quality being good, special attention is being paid to same. Pickling onions aro inclined to be very scarce, and the demand is strong. Potatoes, choice A 7 ids to AS per ton; onions AS to £8 10s per ton; pickling onions, Al 3 to Al 3 10s. OTHER VEGETABLES.
