Mr W. S. Short, Assistant Under-Sec-retary to the Public Works Department, who left for Sydney by the Maunganui last evening, will visit Queensland, Victoria and possibly South Australia, in addition bo New South Wales. Ho will make a thorough inquiry into methods of local government, and subsidising local bodies. Mr Short will return to Wellington not later than the end of the present financial year—March 31st. A meeting' of the Board of Directors 01 the .T. D. Williams (N.Z.) Amusement 00., Ltd., was held on Thursday. The secretary placed before tbe board a statement of the returns of the Empress Theatre for six weeks, ended January 30th, 1913. The average net profit was shown to be over £75 per week. Tins return was considered highly satisfactory by the directors.
