Mr Thomas Pettit, Nelson, has received word that his son. Dr AV. H. Pettit, of the Baptist Indian Medical Mission, has passed his final language j examination in Bengal. Dr Pettit holds [ a very important position in the ser- | vice he is attached to, being in charge of the Chandpnr Hospital. Dr Pettit and his wife are (says the “Colonist”) the onlv two Europeans attached to the hospital, the rest of the staff being Bengalis. The medical side of the mission service presents great opportunities for assisting the work. The third class match North v. St. Mark’s will bo played on Newtown Park instead of Eelburne.
Mr H. W. Capper, who has boon Chief Postmaster and Deputy Commissioner of Stamps at Christchurch for the last five years, retired yesterday on superannuation after forty-two years’ service, according to a Press Association telegram. Tho staff presented him with a purse of sovereigns, and reference was made to his ability and just treatment of the staff. Mr Capper’s health has not been good lately. Ho intends to leavo for Auckland shortly, where his two sons are settled.
