ASCENT OF MOUNT RUAPEHU
CRATER LAKE FROZEN
TAIHAPE MAX FALLS DOWN A
GLACIER
Special to the “Times.”
MARTUX, January 30
An ascent ol Mount ituapehu was mado on January 2ote and 26th by a mountaineering party consisting oi Messrs L. ilorter, R. Sampson, J. l xl ll R. \Vi user, W. J. Hamilton, and T. E. McMillan, Mr A. Bagley acting as guide. Alter somo exciting experiences the party reached the summit, and found that tho crater lake was now frozen. Tho state of this lake, it is said, varies with the activity or quiescence of Ngauruhoe. A member of an Ohakune party in the person of Mr b isher, telegraph operator of tho Taihape Post Office, met with a nasty accident, while trying to make tho ascent. It appears that he slipped down a glacier for several feet. His hands were badly lacerated as ho rolled down, the skin being practically all torn off. Despite this Mr Fisher seemed intent upon continuing tho ascent until he mot Mr Bagley’s party returning, and ho was then convinced that it was impossible for a man with maimed and bandaged hands to got over tho last ridge. Mountaineering is very brisk just now, parties arriving from all parts of th© Dominion for somo considerable time past.
