RAILWAY STAFFS’ PICNIC

AN DXJTING AT DAY'S BAY. The staffs of the head offices of the Railway Department held their annual picnic at Day’s Bay yesterday in fine weather, and there was a large attendance. The outing proved most enjoyable, plenty of amusement being afforded for young and old. An excellent luncheon was provided, and there was a plentiful supply of toys, fruit, and lollies for the cluldren. A fine sports programme had been arranged, and the aggregate cup for the highest points in the athletic and swimming events was won by the head office staff, while the Peterkin Cup for the competitor scoring the most points in the same sections was won by .1. M. Power, of the Stores Department. The committee and the secretary (Mr H. MoKeowen) had all the arrangements in excellent order, and are to bo heartily congratulated on the way they carried out their duties. Among the heads of the departments who attended were Messrs T. Ronayne, A. L. Beattie, J. Burnett, and Wynne. There were also many representatives from other branches of the Civil Service. Apologies were received from the Prime Minister, Hon. W. H. Henries, and other prominent members of the Government. Idle officials for the sports events were: Messrs Harris, Chitty, McGovern, Chariton, Lund on, Sutherland, Simmons, Weir, and Kelly; tennis, Messrs McCaul, Muir, and Pratt; cricket, Messrs P. Smith, Nash, and Pontoons; bowling, Messrs J. P. Kelly, Batten, and P. J. McGovern; treasurer, Mr Y. K. Bond. The following are the results:—

Bowling— Locomotive Department 1, Stores Department 2, Chief Accountant’s Department 3. 50yds Swimming Handicap.—Masson 1, Walker 2. Thomson 3.
