PLUNKET SHIELD CANTERBURY AND AUCKLAND MEET. LATTER COLLAPSE. Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 29. The cricket match for the Plunket Shield, between Auckland and Canterbury, commenced on the Domain to-day in tine weather. There was an attendance of about 3000. Auckland won tho toss, and decided to make use of what looked like an easy wicket. Grenier and Olliff were tho pioneer batsmen, and it was soon apparent the wicket was not as good as it looked. Spots soon developed at each end and the balls bumped badly. It improved, however, during the afternoon and between 5 and 6 o'clock played well. Grenier appeared to bo suffering from nerves, and was badly beaten by Sandman in the first over, He managed to score 9, and was then clean bowled Reese, who had opened with Sandman. 17 —9 —l. Hemus followed, and the rate of scoring was slow for a long time. The howling was well on the spot, and the fielding was keen. Ollifi, after finding the measure of the bowling, opened out and soon ran into doubles figures, but with his score at 17 he returned one to Sandman. 35 —2—17. Sale helped Hemus to take the score to 54, and was then taken by Boxshall off a fast ono from Dennett, who had relieved lleeee. 54—3—4. Snedden followed, and Carlton relieved Sandman. Neither man took any risks. When tho total was 78 Hemus stopped ono from Sandman with his pads. 78—4 —29.

Horspool filled the vacancy, and at once commenced to hit out. Ho appeared to relish Sandman, hitting 20 off one over, ono hit being tor 6. He was taken by Patrick well over the boundary. Horspool only batted fourteen minutes, but scored 32. He was out to a mishit. 123 —5—32. With tho exception of Taylor and Kavanagh none of the remaining batsmen did much, and the innings, which lasted 190 minutes, ended for 190. Canterbury’s fielding was capital, and the bowling excellently managed. Lusk and Caygill opened for Canterbury, but the former soon left, being clean bowled by Olliff for 11. Caygill and Hayes then carried the score to 110 before a separation was effected. After Caygill was bowled by Taylor Bishop went in but after playing one back was splendidly caught on the boundary. Patterson had a brief stay, but Reese was in for some time; his object was to play out time, but in the last over of tho day Hemus, who had gone on as a last resource, got him l.b.w.
