THE CASE OF JAMES THORPE. A GREAT BLOW TO AMATEUR SPORT. NEW YORK, January 28. James Thorpe, the Indian athlete, admits that ho was a professional baseball player in 1909 and 1910. The trophies will he returned to the Games Committee. American officials consider that this exposure will be a great blow to amateur sport.

It was stated yesterday that Thorpe, the winner of the pentathlon and. decathlon at the Olympic Games last year, had been adjudged a professional, on the ground that he played in a professional baseball team. He thus loses all the trophies and the runners-np will be awarded them, according to the rules of the Olympic Games.
