MASTERTON NEWS

January 28.

At the meeting of Stonehenge Lodge last evening Bro. H. M. Wilson, wfio was recently married, was presented with a silver butter-dish by the member* to mark the occasion. Mr Frederick Chailis, who was drowned at Saltwater Creek with three others, was bora at Carterton, and resided for some years at Masterton. His father, two brothers, and four sisters live in Masterton.

Heavy rain has fallen throughout the district during the past twenty-four hours, and low-lying land has been flooded. Tho rain was much needed for pastures and crops. Tho following officers have been elected in connection with the local branch of the Overseas Club: —President, Mr J. M. Ooradine; vice-presi-dents, Messrs A. W. Hogg and G. R. Sykes; committee, Mesdames J. M. Coradine, N. Miller, Braddell, Anderson, Messrs J. Georgeson, J. Hessey, Dr Cook, and Rev. H. Watson. There is a fair demand just now for labour, principally for harvest and farm hands.

Dr. Brown, who has acted as locum tenens for Dr. Palmer, of Featberston, during the past nine months, will leave for London this week.

The Greytown Dairy Company -will forward 250 cases of cheese to London this week. From March Ist next there will be a daily mail service to Carrington and West Taratahi. The Lansdowne School will hold its annual picnic at Willow Park, Opaki, on February 14th. Mrs Matson, a well-known resident of Mauriceville West, is seriously ill, and has been removed to the Masterton Hospital for treatment. The newly-formed sports dub at Mauriceville West has decided to hold a meeting on Easter Monday. This n-ill be the first time for twelve years that a sports gathering has been held in that district.
