AUSTRALIAN NAVY

£5,500,000 TO BE SPENT THIS

YEAR,

SYDNEY, January 28.

The Federal Minister for Defence (Senator Pearce) says that Australia will spend £5,500,000 on its Navy in 1913.

NAVAL DEVELOPMENT. “WE ARE ONLY ON THE FRINGE.” (Received January 28, 9.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, January 28. Senator Pearce, speaking at the Government dockyard employees’ picnic, said: “We do not intend to allow the question of naval development to resr where it is. We are only on the fringe. That the future will see a big development is apparent to anyone who looks ahead. We are the predominating white race in the South Pacific, and, including New Zealand, we are the only white race. If the whites are to play any part in the history of the Pacific, that part must be played by Australasians. That is a tremendous responsibility, but 1 believe Australasia to be capable of rising thereto and fulfilling her destiny.”
