THEFT OF A VIOLIN

A peculiar case was before the Alagistrate’s Court to-day. In May last a house, was destroyed by fire, atid the occupier, James PhilJipson, recovered in. suranco on goods returned as burnt. It was recently discovered that some of the property was not destroyed, and Phillipson was charged with tho theft of a violin and with obtaining £2O from tho New Zealand Insurance Company by fraud. Ho was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. The magistrate remarked that it was a most serious matter, and probably this class of offence was rather common, though difficult to detect, •
