A. & P. SHOWS

HOROWHENUA. The seventh annual show will be held at Levin to-day. The entries are large in all classes, and together with the competition provided, a real day’s outing is waiting for those who make the trip and visit tho show. In tho

competition classes all kinds of events will bo contested. There are two boys' pony races, a trotting race, four jumping events, and a. ladies' driving competition, for which the prize is a gold bracelet. Those who wish to sec a fine collection of dairy stock should not miss attending. Some eighty-five yards will bo exhibited, amongst which aro twonty-ono entries for the best dairy cow. It is claimed by the committee that, with tile stock shown from the experimental farm, tho finest collection of dairy cows ever exhibited along this coast will be on the grounds. Tho classes for purebred cattle, pigs, and sheep have also been well supported, as aro those of tho horse classes. All that is required now to make the show a record one, both in attendance and in tho quality of tho stock on exhibition, is a fine day. Train arrangements from Palmerston North and Wellington are well suited for visitors. PAHIATOA. Matters in connection with tho forthcoming show continue to excite the most enthusiastic interest amongst residents and settlers of the district, and on Saturday evening tho secretary (Mr J. A. Walsh) had an exceedingly busy time receiving late entries, which were more numerous than any previous year. As an indication of tho rapid headway tho association is making it may bo mentioned that during the last few days the membership has increased from 240 to 260. With anything like a fine day on Friday next the assemblage should bo the largest ever seen in the Forty-mile Bush. Splendid entries have been received this year, both in numerical strength and quality of exhibit, tho competitions and horse sections filling particularly well. Tho cattle classes aro also very good, and include quite a number of prizewinners. The Jersey and Holstein classes are responsible for substantial entries, and they should prove the star attraction of the cattle section. There will bo numerous side-shows on tho ground, and a couple of guessing competitions. Everything has been done by the committee to make the show as attractive as possible. MASTERTON. Tho competition between the breeders .of stock in Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Manawatu, and tho West Coast has been very keen in recent years. In sheep, cattle and horses the honours are fairly distributed. Hawke’s Bay has prided itself upon its Lincoln sheep and its draught horses. Manawatu has claimed the pride of place for Romneys. Wanganui derives satisfaction from the knowledge that its cattle cannot be beaten. The Wairarapa breeds cattle, sbeep, and horses, and has been consistently successful in the show-ring. Tho Mastorton show is regarded as the convincing ground for stock-breeders, and this year tho competition is likely to bo more keen than over. Even Southern breeders are beginning to try their fortunes against the North. .The show at Solway on February 18th and 19th, at which £IOOO is being offered in,cash prizes, is being looked forward to with unusual interest on this account. Entries close with the secretary, Mr J. B. Emmett, at Masterton, on February Ist.
