WAIKANAE CARNIVAL

Heavy and threatening weather till about 10 o’clock militated against attendance at the carnival at \t aikanae on Anniversary Day, and the fact of tho usual midday train being taken oil also prevented many from a distance from coming. Notwithstanding this and various counter attractions, there was a fair attendance, and the various events drew good entries and afforded hearty amusement to tho spectators. The Weraroa Boys’ Band was present, and discoursed music at intervals during the day. As usual on such occasions tho different horse events proved especially attractive. Such items as apple bobbin"- in a well filled basin or tub, lightning changes by the men into ladies’ costume, orange carrying, egg and spoon race, etc., evoked keen competition, and equally keen interest on tho part of tho onlookers.

Mesdamos Walton and Lay and Miss Emma Brown had charge of an inviting refreshment stall, where good business was done, and the general committee consisted of Rev. J. Edwin Jones, Messrs H. G. and T. W. Brown, L. J. Howell, M. Jones, Luxford, Walkley, and Austin, with several other willing helpers, among whom should be named Mr Tom Stewart, who gave valuable assistance throughout the day. Tho Misses E. Bowman and Hilda Hobson presided ever two mysterious brantubs, whose contents, once sighted, drew many a small coin from an indulgent parent’s pocket. Races for the children were also provided, and the usual guessing competitions and side shows.

The following were the principal events with the winners’ names:—
