MONA LISA NOT STOLEN
BUT DAMAGED AND HIDDEN IN LOUVRE.
LONDON, January 26. Tho “Observer's” Paris correspondent states that tho missing Giooonda has not left the Louvre. Tho picture was damaged by spilling, acid over it, and tho story of its theft was promulgated to save officials.
The celdbrated picture by Leonardo da Vinoi, “La Giooonda” or "Mona Lisa,” familiar everywhere in innumerable reproductions. was reported to have been stolen from the Louvro in August, 1911. It is one of tho world's most famous portraits, painted on a wooden panel, and has long been one of the glories of the Louvre. Leonardo da Vinci was the most accomplished painter of his generation, and one of the most accomplished of the world. “Mona Lisa," which was painted about tho year 1500, was purchased by Francis I. for 4000 gold florins. It was generally considered to bo the most striking example of Leonardo's powers.
