BOATING FATALITY
FOUR MEN DROWNED
ONE BODY STILL UNRECOVERED
Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, January 27. A boating accident occurred at Sait water Crcclt yesterday, four men being drowned.
The party was trawling near the north bank and entered a punt to cross to the southern side. A southwest wind mado the water choppy. There wore seven men in tho punt. A good deal of water was shipped, and the boat capsized. Tho members of tho party were clothed. John Ashby (Sei'tou), who was wearing waders, got ashore, and William Clark (Sefton) swam ashore. Matthew Gallagher (Christchurch) clung to tlig boat. Tho other four—Prank Powell, Leslie Parker, Robert Rapson (all of Belton), and Frederick Challis (Christchurch) —were drowned. Powell, who was a middle-aged man, leaves a wife and eight children, Ohal-
~s, a wifo and a child four months Ad.
The bodies of Francis Powell, Leslie Parker, and Frederick Chaliis were recovered early this morning. At 1 a.m., when the tide was low, Messrs W. J. and A. McMillan went out in a boat with fishermen named Morris and Phillips, and, dragging over the spot where the accident occurred with a fishing net, they brought up the body of Powell after twenty minutes.
Dropping the net again, they brought up the bodies of Parker and Ghaliis. i
All efforts to recover Robert Rapson’s body proved fruitless.
