MR MASSEY AT ROTORUA

GRANTING OF THE FREEHOLD.

Press Association.

ROTORUA,

January 27.

Tho Prime Minister leaves to-day by train for Hastings. On Saturday Mr Massey inspected the Taupo Totara Timber Company’s lino from Makara to Putaruru, at which place he was entertained by residents at luncheon. In the evening at Rotorua ho received a deputation from townspeople, inquiring whether the Government would consider a request for extending tho freehold to Rotorua, and on what terms, also if the granting of tho freehold would entail residents becoming liable for local administration. Mr Massey said whilst tbo Government was desirous of giving everybody tho opportunity to acquire the freehold, Rotorua was in a different position to other places. Ho would lay tho request before tho Crown Law officers for an opinion. Granting of the freehold would certainly entail tho assumption of responsibility for local administration.

Later in the evening Mr Massey was entertained by lady supporters of the Reform party.
