FOR NIMBLE FINGERS
Never were fancy ‘buttons of all kinds more in vogue than at present, though their cost—alas! —puts them out of reach of many a woman with a small dress allowance. . linen suits, for instance, demand buttons to match —buttons that will wash with the dress, and not pull away or iron all out of shape in the laundry! There is an excellent way of making washaible fancy buttons at home. If you want a dozen, buy twelve large and twelve small bone buttons, the small ones so small that they will fit into the concave upper side of the larger. This outer one should, if possible, either match your material in colour, or else be a good contrast. The smaller one can ibe just the common white bone sort. You start by cutting small circles of stuff, and covering the sm-ill ones, cutting off as much of the ends as possible. Now fit each of these on to a large one, and sew strongly and neatly through the holes in the latter. You will have a linen-covered button with a bone rim, which no amount of wadhing can possibly spoil. Silk, satin, and cloth fancy buttons can bo made in just the same way, cost far lees, and wear infinitely better than any bought ones. With a little practice, the most elegant-embroidered buttons can be fashioned, looking, when mode, as though they breathed the very word “Paris."
