UNIVERSITY SENATE
Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 25. At the University Senate the intention of a proposal brought forward by Air Von iiaaat was to abolish the annual conference of representatives from professorial boards of the affiliated colleges. With this object in view he moved that the resolution which provided for such conferences to bo held in turn iu each of the college centres, and at times to be fixed by the .Senate, be rescinded. fie contended it was quite unnecessary to hold such conferences yearly, and that the result was futile compared with the great cost involved. Dr Fitchett seconded the motion. The conference was unconstitutional in the present circumstances, and the relation of professors to the university would hare to ho placed on a proper basis. Professor Hunter moved, as an amendment, the recommendations submitted by the last professorial conference, to this effect: That the future constitution of the conference be made the primary subject of discussion at the conference of 1913; that the next conference comprise seven representatives of each of the professorial boards, together with the heads of the medical, engineering, dental and mining schools, and the Dean of the Faculty of Law at Victoria College. Mr Hogben seconded the amendment. The Chancellor said that personally he had never been opposed to the consultation of professors upon academic questions, but he urged it was the experts in each subject who should bo consulted. Professor E Brown and Ur McDowell favoured provision being made for a periodical conference.
The motion was adopted, it boing understood that steps will be taken to provide for ihc holding of a conference more suitable in constitution. Tne Senate appointed Mr Charles Maturiu. LL.D. (Dublin) examiner in Roman Law, International Law, and in Conflict of Laws.
