MOTOR-CAR SMASHES
TWO KILLED : SEVERAL INJURED SENSATIONAL COLLISION NEAR TRENTHAM. A sensational motor-car accident happened on Saturday morning near Silverstream, when two taximeter cars bound for tho Trentham races came into collision. Ono car, driven by Joseph Foster, and owned by Messrs ■Collins, Kerr and Co., Ltd., Harris street, Wellington, contained Messrs H. J. Duff (Hawks’s Bay), Gerald Stead (Christchurch), and M. Murphy (Poverty Bay). Tho other car, owned bv Mr M. H. Robertson, licensee ot the Commercial Hotel, was in _ charge of Eric Wallace, and was carrying Messrs It M Brewer (Oriental Bay), H. \V. Brown (Oriental Bay), Mr Higgms, and Mr W. M. Curtis, an American visitor. When about a mile to the south of Trentham, Eos ter tried, to pass lace's car, which was turned to the Jelt on Foster sounding his “ hooter.’ Foster just cleared tfie other car, when the wheels skidded on tho side of the road, which has a slight incline and is covered with grass. Foster’s taxi swerved, and tho other vehicle ran into and capsized it, throwing tho occupants out. Wallace's car dashed through a fence into a paddock, and those travelling in it were also thrown out. It pulled up about fifty yards away, having lost tho tyre off tho left front wheel. Both cars struck telegraph poles. Foster, who was precipitated through tho wind-screen of his motor, received a largo gash on his right thigh, the muscles being ruptured. Mr Curtis had a bone in his left forearm broken near tho wrist. Messrs Brown and Higgins received a severe shaking. Mr Duff had several ribs on his left side broken, but Messrs Stead and Murphy were not hurt. Tho injured persons were conveyed to tho Wellington Racing Club’s ambulance room, where they were attended to by Dr Fyffe. Foster was subsequently removed to tho Wellington hospital, and Mr Duff to a private hospital in tho city. Last evening Foster’s condition had improved a good deal, and Mr Duff was slightly better.
ONE KILLED: TWO INJURED. IN A MOTOR SMASH NEAR TIMARU. GIRLS’ MARVELLOUS ESCAPE. Press Association. TIMARU, January 26. Through the bursting of a tyro a fatal motor-car accident occurred last evening four miles south of Timaru. The car was owned and driven by Mr McFarlano, a farmer, of Waitaki, and beside him on the front seat was Mr Charles H. Guthrio, stock agent at Waimato for the National Mortgage and Agency Company. In the back seat were Mr Harrison, a farmer, of Waihao, and two young daughters of Mr McEarlane.
The car capsized upon the men, but the girls W'ere thrown clear and were unhurt. Mr Guthrie, a married man, was killed, and Mr McEarlane very seriously hurt, suffering a broken leg and ribs and injuries to the head. Mr Harrison is suffering chiefly from shock. Messrs McFarlane and Harrison, who formerly lived at Rakaia, are now in hospital.
CAR GOES OYER BANK. ONE MAN KILLED: COMPANION ESCAPES. INVERCARGILL, January 26. News was received to-day that Mr Bartholomew Lynch, a traveller, of Invercargill, was killed in a motoring accident at Mataura Island this morning. Particulars are meagre, but it is understood that the motor-car went over a bank, the occupants being thrown out. There was another man in tho car, but he escaped without injury. LITTLE GIRL KNOCKED DOWN. BY MOTOR-CAR IN THE CITY. Alice Middleditch, a little child, was knocked down by a motor-car in the city yesterday morning. She received injuries to her chest which necessitated her removal to tho hospital, but they are not thought to bo of a serious nature. Last evening she was reported to bo progressing favourably.
