THE STATE FARMING PAPER. JANUARY ISSUE. In tho January number of the agricultural ‘‘Journal,’' published by the department, farmers will land a great deal of valuable information on general farming matters, while several articles from the State experts and other contributors deal with special subjects in a way that appeals to the average reader who does not like being befogged with a lot of technical expressions, Mr Clifton, chief of tho fields division, contributes a review of the investigations by Mr T. Jamieson on tho utilisation of tho nitrogen of tho air by plants, in an article headed “Agricultural Research.” That well-known contributor, Mr Primrose McConnell, gives a digest of tho work of tho year on the State Farm of Instruction at Ruakura, which is under his management, Tho manorial valuo of refuse from New Zealand flax forms the subject of a lengthy and valuable article by the chief chemist, Mr B. C. Aston, F.C.S. Mr W. S. HR], the young gentleman who has charge of tie plant selection and breeding experiments at Moumahaki, outlines tho basic principle underlying tho improvements of plants and appeals to farmers for their co-operation in extending for their co-opera-tion in extending the work, which is of tho utmost importance to all who farm tho land. Mr 0. J. Beakes, D.V.Sc., M.8.C.V.5., in a short article, describes an uncommon disease called filariasis, that was detected in a dog at the Auckland quarantine station. Cross fertilisation of peas and narcissi culture is dealt with by Mr AV. Taylor in an illustrated notice that is well worth following up. In view of the near approach of the sheepclipping season an illustration and dimensions of a now “walk in” dip are timely. Mr T. AV. Lonsdale talks of potatoes and gives some very valuable information regarding; the kind of manure to use and its effect on _ the crop. Tho dairying interest is provided with seasonable articles by Mr AV. E. Gwillim on cheese matters and by Mr AV. M. Singleton on the progress of the newly adopted system of semi-official testing of purebred dairy cattle. Messrs Ferris, Jacobsen, and Brown contribute their usual monthly notes on the respective departments under their control—flaxmißing, beekeeping, and poultry keeping. Some very welcome advice is given to tomato growers by_ Mr W A. Boucher in addition to his usual monthly orchard notes. Methods of growing grapes under glass are discussed by Mr 8. F. Anderson. The usual information regarding crops and weather conditions combine to make one of the best issues that have yet been published.
