MENTAL HOSPITAL ESCAPEE
PATIENT CLAIMS TO BE SANE. Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 24. So far no definite announcement has been made concerning the department’s intentions in the case of the man Johnson, who escaped from the Auckland Mental Hospital three weeks ago. Johnson is perfectly willing to leave his hiding place and give himself up to the authorities, provided he is afforded the opportunity of proving his claim to sanity. Mrs Johnson wrote recently to the Minister, asking for a thorough inquiry, and was referred to Dr. Beattie, medical superintendent at the mental hospital. Dr. Beattie is away on holiday, and is not due back until February 7th. Mr J. It, London, solicitor for Johnson, to-day wrote to the Minister asking that a board of inquiry should bo set up to inquire into Johnson’s case, and stating that immediately the board was so constituted Johnson would como forward for examination.
