There appears to bo little likelihood of any change occurring for some time in the position which led to the layingup in the stream of the steamers Mapourika and Begulus. The enforced withdrawal of these vesels from their customary runs does not seem to have caused any great inconvenience to the companies concerned, while the men who used to work them have nearly all secured employment elsewhere. A passenger who returned from a round trip by the Hinemoa yesterday reports that the seals on the south-west coast are becoming scarcer every year.
