AUCKLAND NOTES
Special to the primes." AUCKLAND, January 34. Training matters in connection with next week’s meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club are quieter now than I ever remember, and early risers at Ellerslie have not been rewarded by witnessing any great amount of fast work. The Soult mare Kakama did not go to Australia after all on Monday. She was taken down to the boat, but all attempts to get her into the box failed, and she had to be returned to Ellerslie. At one lime Kakama -almost went mad, and rearing up, foil backwards on the wharf, fortunately escaping without injury. La Tieirm does not appear any the worse for her Christmas racing, and Mr Coder's mare is getting'through useful work. She has plenty of weight, but tie oppositon in the Takapuna Cup is not by any moans high class, and she may he hard to dispose of. Amongst the small amount of work registered during the week .Waiorewa ran six furlongs on the sand in Imin 17sec, a very satisfactory gallop. She is hitting out in fine style. A horse who gives evidence of returning to form ia Blue Garment. The gelding has not done well for some time, but he is now showing a lot of pace on the crack, and on Thursday morning covered half a mile on the sand in 50 X-ssec. After racing on the opening day at Takapuna Scorch, together with Monorail, will be taken to the Poverty Bay meeting by P. Loomb. Both horses are moving along well. Scorch in particular. On Tuesday she ran a mile on the sand in. Imin 47sec, finishing nicely. Goldeize, who is to be taken to Hawera next week by ,T. Chaafe, is hitting out freely, and the other morning ran four furlongs on the sand in a tick under
SOsec. Chaafo is also standing Maxwell up to his work, and yesterday Soultlme s brother covered seven furlongs in Imm 32sec. Goodwin Sands, purchased last week for 80 guineas by J. Kean, was taken to Sydney by T. Williams on Monday. It is likely that Bow Bel Is v w'ho runs in tho nomination of Mr Kean, will also be sent across shortly. Sedition has pulled up a trifle "groggy' each time he has galloped lately, and the chances of him standing a solid preparation are remote. The veteran Advocate is so far standing up to the work being allotted him. If he runs in the Takapuna Cup he will be ridden by B. Deeley. Apellon and Monoline, in F. McManemin’s stables, aro getting through useful sprinting work. Mouoline is perhaps going host, and she may run well before the Takapuna meeting concludes. Tho well-known cross-country horseman J. N. McGregor, who has been following the profession in Australia for several years past, is at present on a visit to Auckland. J. Steckley, the light-weight who has been attached to J. Chaafe’s stable, left for Sydney on Monday.
