ANNUAL SALE OF WAIKANAE YEARLINGS

THIRTEEN LOTS EEALISE 1045 GUINEAS. The annual sale of the , Waikanae yearlings took place on the lawn at Mr lan Duncan’s residence, Hobson street, yesterday afternoon. This is generally looked upon as one of the most interesting events during Cup week, but on the present occasion, owing to several of

tho young thoroughbreds having been sold at Christchurch last November, tho list of yearlings was not so full as usual. There was a line gathering on the prettily-situated lawn, quite a number of prominent visiting sportsmen being grouped round the ringside, while the Wellington racing world was strongly represented. Most were there apparently as spectators only, and the sale was a rather lifeless one, Mr F. H. Pyne, the auctioneer, having hard work in extracting bids, and as a result some of the lots went very cheaply. Tho highest jrrice was realised for a very nice .brown colt by Achilles—Lady Helen, the dam of Merriwa. This handsome youngster was tho pick of the collection, and ho was secured by the Auckland owner, Mr George Dunnett, for 250gns. Mr W. E. Bidwill gave IGOgns for a very shapely filly by Charlemagne 11. ,from the Birkenhead mare Monarda, who certainly looked like proving a galloper. A particuarly nice filly, by Martian—Two Step, went very cheaply for 125gns, and she should early pay for horsolf. Tho bay filly by Achilles—Channian, and the brown colt by Signor—lsmene, both late foals, were not sold. In all thirteen yearlings realised 1045gns, or an average of slightly over 80gns each.
