LANDING EXPLOSIVES
INQUIRY CONCERNING ALLEGED NEGLIGENCE. Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 24. An inquiry has been held as to tho landing of explosives in the port from Home steamers. It was with reference to the transfer of the first cargo of explosives into the Huia from the liner Kia Ora in October last that the inquiry was held. Someone, it appears, made representations to tho Internal Affairs Department that proper precautions were not observed and insisted upon by the officer of the department who superintended the unloading of the Kia Ora’s consignment of Nobel goods, and that unnecessary risks were incurred. Accordingly the department appointed Lieutenant-Colonel Johnston, Director of Ordnance to tho Defence Department, to hold an inquiry as to the propriety of the method in which operations were conducted. Colonel Johnston will in duo course present, his report to the Minister of Internal Affairs.
