rjT H E MAYORALTY Mr. Dwan will address tie Electors THIS EVENING, the 11th instant, at the Arcade Buildings. The chair will be taken at 8 o’clock sharp. 3213 rjTHK MAYORAL ELECTION Wellington, Oct. 20. 1380. TO ANDREW YOUNG, ESQ. Dear Sir, —We, the undersigned ratepayers of•’tlie City of Wellington, do hereby request that you will allow yourself to be nominated for the position of Mayor, and in the event of your doing so, we pledge ourselves to use our utmost endeavors to secure Tour return. We are, dear sir, yours faithfully— W. V, Jackson, Benjamin Ling, Peter Laing, A. R. Hislop, and 148 other signatures. Gentlemen, —l have to thank you very much for the flattering and very numerously signed requisition asking me to allow myself to be nominated for the Mayoralty of this City. In accepting the invitation to contest the election, let me assure you that in the event of my being elected, I shall use my utmost endeavors to further the best interests of the ratepayers, and I sincerely hope that my efforts will not cause you to regret the confidence so generously bestowed upon me.—l have the honor to be, Gentlemen, yours most obediently, ANDREW YOUNG. TO THE RATEPAYERS OF THE CITY OF WELLINGTON. Ladies and Gentlemen, —ln offering myself as a candidate for the office of Mayor of this City, I beg to submit a few outlines of my opinions upon civic matters. The first object of our City Councillors in these trying times, should be, not to increase the already heavy taxation of the ratepayers. We must try to do without further loans for some time, and confirm our expenditure within the limits of our revenue. Having always objected to the payment of our Municipal Head—looking upon such payment as coming out of the pockets of the already ov r-taxed ratepayers—l shall not, in the event of being elected, accept such remuneration. I shall at all times take pleasure iu seeing the City Council working hand in hand with our newly constituted Harbor Board, as I consider any factious opposition and jealousy from the Council injurious to the best interests of our harbor, and consequently to the city. I shall always advocate the utilising and improving of our town reserves as far as our present means will allow for recreation purposes, thereby creating a domain for our citizens. Having, with other Councillors, supported Councillor Fisher’s scheme for the borrowing of £130,000 for the construction of the Wainuiomata Water Works, considering it an initiatory step towards our future drainage system, I certainly wonld not for the present advocate the immediate prosecution of such drainage works. The utilising of surplus water for flushing existing drains may have some beneficial effect in a sanitary point of view, and this I consider we must be satisfied with until our city exchequer is in a better state than at present. The removal of our present burial grounds outside the city boundary shall also have my hearty support. I hope to take an early opportunity of personally addressing you upon Municipal matters, and will then enter more fully into particulars affecting the interests of the City.—l am, Ladies and Gentlemen, your obediently, ANDREW YOUNG.
