THE RIOTS AT CHRISTCHURCH AND TIMARU.
(PER press agency.) Christchurch, Tuesday. One thousand pounds bail was offered on behalf ot the men accused of attacking the Or mgs ;-r - j an’ r?f--.'- j. The contractors, of whom Barrett is one, were afraid to go on on Saturday, as the resentment against their men, many of whom are supposed to have been in the row, was too event. Timaru, Tuesday. A special meeting of the Orange Lodge was held Inst night. A procession is proposed on Xew Year’s Day, when preparations will be made to firmly resist any interference. The conduct of the Inspector of Police in not ordering the arrest of the offenders is generally condemned. The clergyman of the Roman Catholic Church animadverted severely yesterday on the conduct ot the rioters, and asked all who would promise not to take part in a similar gross proceeding on Xew Year’s Day to hold up their hands. It is said that only three hands were held up. Timaru, Tuesday, "la -v.-’-’ o g-t'.’iUa ’ 1 can summoned to-day to parade at 3 p.m., and a guard of artillerymen was on duty throughout the night. The town is quiet, but it is expected that there will be a recurrence of Friday’s riot on the Ist January, when it is rumored tint the Orange Lodge intend parading. The assistance of the police, of the artillery corps, and of special constables, has been called into requisition for that day. The public sympathy is in favor of the Orangemen, the unwarrantable action of the other party being generally condemned. The ringleaders in the late riot will be summoned at the Police Court, the Resident Magistrate giving evidence for the prosecution. Further serious disturbances betiveen the Orangemen and Catholic- are expected on Xew Year’s Day. Both parties are beating up recruits. The authorities, however, are taking effectual measures to preserve the peace. Ten warrants fnr the arrest of Boxing Day rioters were issued, and will be executed today. Since the arrival of the Dunedin police, the footpaths have been cleared of loiterers. The Kerrymen are indignant at the invasion of their privileges. The police complain that the number of men in Timaru is inadequate for the size ot the town and population. Later. The Timaru Orangemen have resolved to have no procession or demonstration on Xew Year’s Day. It is anticipated everything will pass off quietly. Christchurch, Tuesday. As a precautionary measure, the special constables sworn-in last week will muster to-mor-row night.
