VITAL STATISTICS.

The Registrar-General’s report on the vital statistics of the principal towns of New Zealand during the month of November, 1879, is as follows ;

The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all oases. Population.—ln the cases marked thus * the numbers given are for the 3rd March, 1878, according to the census then taken ; in the other cases the numbers have been estimated for the Ist January, 1879. The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 474, against 566 in October, being an decrease of 92. The deaths amounted to 124 in November, being a decrease of 26 on the number in October. Of the above deaths, males contributed 73; females, 51. 59 of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 47’58 per cent, of the whole number ; 42 of these were of children under one year of age.
