CRICKET.

An interesting game of cricket was played at the Basin Reserve on Saturday, between teams representing the different Banks and Insurance Associations doing business in town. Play was to have commenced at eleven o'clock, the insurance companies having closed for the day, and arrangements having been made for the Bank employes to get away before the time, which they were prevented however from doing owing to a press of business ; and the wickets were consequently not pitched till one o'clock. The Bank team were the first to handle the willow, and quickly began to score. At two o’clock four wickets were down for 50, when the two teams adjourned to the grand stand for luncheon, provided by the Insurance people, and to which full justice was done. Hemming play, the batting seemed nob so good. The Insurance team fielded bett ; r, and their bowling was more effective, so that the Bankers were soon a!l out, having run up a total score of 70, made up principally by the dashing play of Shand, England, and Budge. The Ins ,r 'nee team lost no time in facing the bowling, Kirker and Leckie going in first. These two played well together, and gave the field plenty of work, not being separated unti the score stood at 23, when Kirker was vvelH caught by Shand at longstop. Kember followed, but was unfortunate in being bowled for *2. Runs were now slow in coming, and the wickets began to. fall quickly, when Simpson joining Deckle, another stand was made. Lecki; was now bowled, after playing a thoroughly good game. Simpson followed, after scoring rapidly 14. The others made little or no stand, Walters and Bishop only scoring. At 4.15 all were out for a total of 67. The Bankers again resumed the wickets. Shand and Kennedy facing the bowling of Kirker and Astill. The Insurance team were anxious to dispose of their opponents quickly, and played carefully, but still several easy chances were missed. None of the batsmen made a long stand. Shand was nicely caught by Bishop, and Kennedy by McDermott. England made a good score, but after scoring 18 was nicely bowled by Kirker. And. now began the fun. The batsmen played cmtiously, but so did their opponents, and no less than three batsmen followed England, each one retiring on his first ball from Kirker, that cricketer taking four wickets with five balls, thus winning the hat trick. Two men still remained to bat, but it was now six o’clock, and stumps had to be drawn, the game standing eight wickets for 48 runs. The Bankers were thus victorious on the first innings by three runs. This match was looked forward to with considerable interest, and called forth no small amount of enthusiasm. The batting of England, Budge, Shand, and Hamilton, and the bowling of Kennedy, for the Bankers, was particularly good ; while on the Insurance side the batting of Leckie, Simpson, Kirker, and Walters was also good, and the bowling of Kirker very effective. On each aide the fielding was worthy of commendation, taking into consideration the want of practice of the two teams. BANKERS. Ist Innings. 2nd Innings.
