Sailed ; Jane Douglas, for Kaikoura ; Stella, for Akaroa. AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Tho Mary Mildred, barque, whs partially floated off tho sand-bank at Kohimarama to-day, and they expect to float her off completely when the cattle are all out. She is not much damaged. BLUFF, Wednesday. Arrived; Claud Hamilton, Captain Calder. with the thoroughbread horses Le Loup and Trump Cird, for Lyttelton, also ten head of prize rattle, includln a valuable bull, f r the Bluff. Left Melbourne on the 18 h Inst., at 4 p.m. : arrived at Hobarton on the 20th, at 9 p. m.: sailed at midnight and arrived at tho Bluff on.tne 26th, all safe. The following vessels wore in port last night: — Steamers Samson, Agues, Tui, Hiuemoa, Patea, Wellington, Wallace, and Grafton. Ships—Raikaia, Wairoa, St. Leonards, and /ealandia. Barques— Malay, Sophia R. Luhrs, and Edwin Bassett. Brig— Neptune. Three-masted schooners Ellertou and Sophi», The Union Company's steamer Wellington, from Lyttelton and Port Chalmers, arrived in harbor at 12.15 p.m. yesterday. She leaves for Manukau and intermediate ports at 3 o'clock this afternoon. The barque Edwin Bassett, from Newcastle, with a cargo of coal, beat into harbor at noon yesterday. The sailing of the steamer Patea has been postponed till to-<’ay. The schooner Reward, from Greymouth, with a cargo of bricks, arrived here on Tuesday night. Tin Union Company's steamer Taiaroa arrived from Picton and Nelson at 7.30 am, yesterday. She sailed again at 2 p.m. for Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. Captain Williams' barque Sophia R. Luhrs and brig Neptune, which left Newcastle on the 12th and 13th instant respectively, arrived in harbor early yesterday morning. The steamer Oreti sailed yesterday for Manukau and Intermediate ports. The Union Company’s steamer Rotomahana, from Sydney via Auckland, Gisborne, and Napier, will arrive in harbor to-morrow morning. She sails again at 4 p m. for Southern ports. The steamer Manawatu will be launched off tho Slip to-day, and sails for Wanganui to-morrow afternoon.
The steamers Huia, from Wanganui; Stormblrd. from Foxton ; Napier, from Blenheim; and Kiwi, from East Coast, did not put in an appearance last night, doubtless having been detained by the northwest gale. The cable-repairing steamer Agnes sailed for Sydney last evening. The steamer Rangatira, from Wanganui, Taranaki, and Mannkau, arrived here last night. She returns to the same ports this evening. The steamer Kennedy may be expected to arrive from Nelson and West Coast ports to-morrow morning. She is advertised .’to return to the West Coast same evening. during the night, being unable to face the north-west gale. Captain J. F. Cor, master of the British ship Privateer, which arrived at Delaware Breakwater on Sept. 9. from London, says:—“On Augusts, 100 miles west of Brest {France), weather fine and clear, at 5 p.m., as I was walking the quarter-deck, looking to win ward, I saw something black rise out of the ater about twenty feet, in shape like an immense snake, about three feet In diameter.- It was about 300 yards from the ship coming towards us. It turned its head .partly from us, and went down with a great splash, after staying up about five seconds, but rose again three times, at intervals of ten seconds, until it had turned completely from us and was going from us with great speed and making the water boil all round it. I could see its eyes and shape perfectly. It was like a great eel or snake, but as black as coal-tar, and appeaed to be making great exertions to getaway from the ship. I ha.e seen many kinds of fish in five different oceans, but vas never favored with a sight of the great sea-snake before.”
