MEETING OF CREDITORS.
A meeting of creditors in the estate of Lewis Moss was held at the Supreme Court House yesterday morning, a large number of creditors being present. Some little difficulty was experienced in finding a chairman, but at length Mr. Lipman Levy was elected.
The Chairman stated that the meeting had been called, to consider whether the deed, assigning the estate to Mr. Joseph Joseph for the benefit of the creditors should be assented to. Mr. J. Dransfield moved, and Mr. M. L. Marks seconded, that the deed be assented to. Mr. Whittem moved as an amendment that the estate should be wound up through the Bankruptcy Court. In seconding the amendment Mr. Hareourt e&id he considered it would be a stigma en the mercantile community if an assignment was agreed to. For the last ten or twelve years the debtor had been living in an extravagant manner; ho had kept no books, nor had he made the least endeavor to curtail his expenditure, although he had been hopelessly insolvent the greater portion of the time. Some distinction must be made between the honest trader, who was overtaken with misfortune, and others. Were the creditors to assent to the deed of assignment, they would be treating the debtor in the same manner as if he had been honest and straightforward in his dealings. Mr. Marks pointed out that Mr. Hareourt was one of the committee who recommended that the estate should he assigned, to which Mr. Hareourt replied that the committee had recommended an assignment in bankruptcy, and not a private one. Mr. Travers, who appeared for the debtor, said that it would not be necessary to pnt the amendment, w the same result would be attained by neg .tiviug the original resolution. A division was then taken, when seventeen voted in favor of the deed of assignment, representing over £9000; and fifteen voted against it, representing £2032. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the butineii of the meeting.
