PAYMENT OF MEMBERS.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sib, —The Government may well be congratulated on their bringing in a Bill providing for the payment of members, by which there will be an end put to the unseemly discussions that now take place at each session of Parliament, on the subject. Their proposals at first sight appear fair—viz., that the country members should receive £2lO, and those living in the city of Wellington the sura of £157 only. But how about those living in the city representing country constituencies, which, according to custom, they visit during each recess ? which visit, in many instances, involves a considerable amount of time and money. There are, for instance, at present gentlemen living in Wellington representing constituencies on the West Coast of the Middle Island which it will cost them a mouth in time and not less than from *3O to £SO in money to visit. If any distinction is to be made as to the amount members are to receive, I think it should be confined to the city members, and to other members living in the city representing constituencies say within fifty miles of the city.—l am, &c, Observer.
