VITAL STATISTICS.

The Registrar-General’s report on the vital stotiatics-of the principal towns of New Zealand during the month of October, 1879, is as follows :

The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been excluded in all cases,

Population.—ln the cases marked thus # the numbers given are for the 3rd March, 1878, according to the census then taken ; in the other cases the numbers have been estimated for the Ist January, 1879. The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 566, against 513 in September, being an increase of 53. The deaths amounted to 150 in October, being an increase of 12 on the number in September. Of the above deaths, males contributed 75; females, 75. 58 of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 38 67 per cent, of the whole number ; 42 of these were of children under one year of age.
