THREE TirOUSAXI) POUNDS having boon invested by the late Sir Donald McLean for the purpose of founding Scholarships for the native A'nri race, notice is hereby given that the Trustees of the Bequest have decided to offer for competition THREE SCHOLARSHIPS of the annual value of Thirtv-five Pounds each, tenable for three years, and open to all Maori Youths in New Zealand. The attention of intending Candidates is directed to the following : 1. The subjects of examination will be — Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Grammar and Composition, Biblical and English Historv, Geography, and easy translation of English into Maori, and rirc rers'.i. 2. Successful candidates will be required to attend the To Ante Native College, Hawke’s Bay, the Principal of which is ,T. Thornton, Esq., formerly Rector of the Oamaru Grammar School. For board, tuition, books, Ac., twenty pounds per annum will be charged. 3. Holders of Scholarships will be allowed travelling expenses to and from their homes each Midsummer Vacation. -1. At the end of the three years a University Scholarship of the annua! value of Fifty Pounds, and tenable for two years, will be offered for competition to the Scholarship holders. The winner of this Scholarship will be required to become a Matriculated Student of tha University of New Zealand, and to attend the College classes of soma institution affiliated to the University. The examination will be held on December 15 and following days, at such places as shall be hereafter appointed. It is reque-ted that the Masters of Native Schools who have candidates for examination will forward applications to me at the earliest possible date, stating the name, age, and address of each candidate, and the number of years he has been attending school.
